"Marga" serves as an identifier and represents the identity of the Batak community. It holds a significant role, especially for Batak students living away from their hometowns. In this context, 'merantau' refers to leaving one's hometown to move to another region or city within Indonesia, with the aim of pursuing education or employment opportunities. This study aims to explore the role of "marga" in the lives of Batak students as a form of self-identity while living in overseas communities. This research employs a qualitative approach using the phenomenological method. The study involves two participants selected based on specific criteria. Data collection techniques include interviews and observations. Data analysis is conducted through text collection, initial coding, theme categorization, frequency counting, meaning interpretation, and findings presentation. The research findings indicate that the concept of marga (clan name) serves multiple psychosocial functions within the Batak community. Firstly, as a form of Social Identity, marga is an inherent attribute acquired at birth that reflects one's origin within the Batak tribe and acts as a cultural marker in multicultural environments. Secondly, as Communal Cohesion, marga functions as a connector among Batak individuals in diaspora, fostering stronger bonds and a sense of brotherhood. Thirdly, as Collective Pride, marga symbolizes a deep sense of pride in one's ethnic heritage. Fourthly, in terms of Moral Cognition, the presence of a marga instills a sense of moral responsibility in individuals while living away from their homeland, serving as a reminder to uphold the family and ancestral name. Fifthly, in meeting Esteem Needs, marga is regarded as a symbol of mutual respect and recognition, particularly among those who share the same clan, thereby reinforcing solidarity. Lastly, as a means of Self-Expression, marga enables individuals to remain authentic to their cultural roots and express themselves without the need to adopt external cultural norms.
